Abstract

This research explains slang in the novel If You Know What Happened in MCI: Sociolinguistics study. This research objectives are to describe (1) forms and the meaning of slang used in the novel If You Know What Happened in MCI; (2) the functions of slang, (3) factors that influence the using of slang in the novel If You Know What Happened in MCI. This research is done by carrying some theories, such as: word formation process theory by Ridwan (2003), alteration of meaning theory by Chaer (1994), the functions of slang theory by Partridge (2013), and SPEAKING theory by Hymes (2010). The design of this research is qualitative descriptive research. The data of this research was attained from slang used in the novel If You Know What Happened in MCI. The method and technique of data collections were consisted of observation technique. Referensial comparing method is used for data analysis. The research comes to this results. The first, the structure of slang consists of 32 words, 13 phrases, and 6 sentences. The structures of slang are based on Indonesian, English, local language, mixture of two languages, and unidentified language. Second, the word formation of slang consists of 10 word formation process such as (1) coinage; (2) borrowing; (3) compounding; (4) blending; (5) clipping; (6) conversion; (7) back formation; (8) acronym; (9) derivation; (10) multiple process. Third, the alteration of slang meaning consists of (1) specialitation, (2) generalisation, (3) pejoration, (4) asociation. Fourth, there are 14 functions of slang found in the novel If You Know What Happened in MCI out of 15 functions proposed by Partridge. Fifth, the social factors proposed by Hymes (2010) are very influencing on the appearance of slang.
