Abstract
The title of this paper is English Used by Tour Guides at Tanah Lot Area. I am interested in observing this topic, because the English used are very complex and I have many important functions which were used by the tour guides in expressing their purpose guest. In analyzing the data, I use some theories. The first theory is Functions of English that is written by Leo Jones, and the second theory is written by Halliday, in his book entitled Exploration In The Functions of Language. Besides, there some other books that used as supporting theories. The data were collected by observing the conversation made by the tour guides with the guest. The method was supported by note taking technique. The data were analyzed based on theories of English Functions. The English functions which were used by them were analyzed whether they were formal or informal expressions. The analysis of the data shows that the tour guides could get in touch with the guest in English well and it can be seen that their conversation was successful. There are nine English functions that have been analyzed in their conversation with the guest. There are: greeting, giving information, offering something, thanking, apologizing, saying good bye. Most of the tour guides used formal language expressions and good attitude when they handling the guest.
