Abstract

The title of this paper is The Analysis of Correspondence Found at KU DE TA Restaurant. The analysis of this paper is focused on the analysis of grammatical cohesion and how it is presented in the correspondence of KU DE TA restaurant. The aims of this study are to identify and describe the types of grammatical cohesion and to find out the forms of each type of grammatical cohesion in the outgoing letters of KU DE TA restaurant. The data are taken from the outgoing letters (e-mail) of KU DE TA restaurant. In analyzing the data, I applied the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) in their book entitled Cohesion in English as the main theory. And it is supported by other theories that are considered relevant to the topic discussed in this paper. There are three methodologies that are used in this research, they are: data source, data collection, and data analysis. The data source of this paper is taken from the outgoing letters (e-mail) of KU DE TA restaurant. The data are collected by reading carefully in order to get a good understanding of the content of the letters. The data are analyzed descriptively by applying the theory mentioned above. Based on the result of the research, I found the types and forms of grammatical cohesion. There are three types of grammatical cohesion found in the letters they are reference, ellipsis, and conjunction. Reference in the form of personal pronoun which is marked by: we, you, your, us, our, it, and them. And reference in the form of demonstrative is marked by: this, that, and here. Ellipsis is in the form of nominal ellipsis and clausal ellipsis. Conjunction in the form of additive is marked by: and, also, either…or, and or. Conjunction in the form of adversative is marked by: however. Conjunction in the form of causal conjunction is marked by: therefore and so. And conjunction in the form of temporal conjunction is marked by the word recently.
